Robotics

March 21, 2024

Every spring the ESU hosts a robotics competition for grades 6-8. Southern entered two teams again this year. This competition enables students to learn how to code and design robots for specific tasks. Starting in January, the teams began preparing for the competition. They had to build the robot and code it to get through a maze using sensors. They also had to use a 3D printer to make parts to use during the “Battle Bot” competition. The team needed to record various things that they learned throughout the process in a notebook.

The competition was held March 13th with 7 teams in attendance. There were three events: The A-Maze-ing Race where the students had to code their bot to maneuver through a course. In the mystery “Coding Challenge”, the team had to code a circuit. They needed to get the circuit to light up and also make sounds. They even had to use their musical talents to read notes and “Name that Tune”. Finally, they had “BattleBots”.Teams use their robots to push, tip over, or disable the other robots, the last robot moving wins. Points were awarded for the notebook, and each of the three competitions. Southern 1 (the 7th grade team) placed 3rd, while Southern 2 (the 6th grade team) placed 7th. Third or Seventh place, the teams would agree that the challenges were fun and they learned to work together to build an interest in coding and engineering. Members of the Robotic Club 7th grade team: Greyson Hock, Levi Lundstedt, Jaxson Young, Brianna Miller, Dominic Renderos, Brayden Bienhoff. Members of the Robotic Club 6th grade team: Kinslee Henrichs, Aleric Clay, Evan Kaster, C.J. Eggerling, Deklyn Griffith, Easton Kostal, Dalton Dorn and Candon Bienhoff.
