Sophomores have been reading nonfiction letters, speeches, and articles to explore the various ways that people win their freedom from oppression. They have been studying the connotative meanings in word choice. This group of sophomores are ready to read. The novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson deals with difficult issues as the main character transitions from childhood to adolescence.
