4th graders have been learning about Nebraska history as part of our social studies curriculum. We have recently been learning about Nebraska becoming a territory, the Homestead Act and how it affected the settlement of our area, and Nebraska became the 37th state of the United States in 1867. We celebrated Nebraska's 156th birthday on March 1. Photographer Solomon Butcher was famous for photographing homesteaders in central Nebraska. The photo included happens to be of my family (Ike Bentley) who homesteaded near Sargeant, NE.
