Mr. Tunink Teaches Chess during Strategy & Logic

April 04, 2023

This semester, I have had the honor of teaching strategy games to many of our 7th graders. In the first image, you will see our final two chess masters, Jadun and Briana. In the tournament, they faced each other 3 times. In their first match, Briana bested Jadun. However, Jadun came back to win against her twice in a row for the crown of chess master. In the second image, you will see a match that is halfway from being completed. Students learned all of the pieces, how they move, and where to place them on the board correctly. We then discussed how the same strategies used in chess can help students organize parts of their lives and think ahead to avoid problems or solve situations where it seems like there are few options available. Students were then placed in situations where being polite and courteous are expected, just like a proper chess match. In our third image, I would like you to see if you can figure out the mistake I made in the setup of the pieces. At first glance, everything seems to be in order, but there are four pieces that are not in their correct location at the beginning of the match.
