AMERICAN LITERATURE

CLASS SYLLABUS

The AMERICAN LITERATURE class (Junior English) uses the textbook THE UNITED STATES IN LITERATURE and focuses on American anthers and literature. The book is arranged chronologically from the 1500's to present day. As such, there is a great dal of literature to read so class concentrates on reading. I believe it is very important to read and think about this literature because Early American Literature reflects what the people were thinking and feeling at that time in history. Reading this literature helps us to understand where and how many of our cultural, social, and even legal practices came from. By better understanding who the American people were, we can better understand who we are today.

We read many short selections from the text as well as several major ones. Some of the major works studies are:

LAST OF THE MOHICANS SCARLET LETTER

O PIONEERS                   GREAT GATSBY

OF MICE AND MEN         GLASS MENAGERIE

We also do some composition units during the course of the year. Some of the compositions assigned are:

-Descriptive Essay form LAST OF THE MOHICANS.

-Persuasive Essays, including the State Writing Assessment

-Personal Essay from O PIONEERS.

BOOK REPORTS are required each quarter. Students are allowed to choose heir own reading selection, based on their age and reading ability. student may substitute the ACE Reader Program as a book report for one quarter.
