MINUTES

BOARD OF EDUCATION

June 8, 2009

7:30 p.m.

 

The meeting was called to order by President Doug Argo at 7:31 p.m. with the following members present:  Doug Argo, Dave Creevan, Carmen McKeever, Terry Milligan, Harlan Rickers and Hannah Zimmerling.

 

Reasonable advance publicized notice of the meeting was given according to law by publishing, a designated method for giving notice of the school district.  Reasonable advance notice was simultaneously given to board members and a copy of their acknowledgment of receipt of notice and the agenda attached.  All proceedings hereafter shown were taken while the convened meeting was open to the attendance of the public.

 

President Doug Argo announced that a complete copy of the Open Meetings Act is posted in the back of the board of education meeting room.

Moved by Rickers, seconded by Creevan, to change agenda to move Item XA after executive session.

Carried: 6-0

Voting Yes:  Argo, Creevan, McKeever, Milligan, Rickers, Zimmerling

 

Moved by Rickers, seconded by Zimmerling, to approve the minutes of the May 11th regular regular board of education meeting and the May 20th special board meeting.

Carried: 6-0

C.D. Bids for the month were as follows:

 

Security First Bank:

Blue Springs

Special Fund            .35%

General Fund            .35%

 

Wymore State Bank

Special Fund            .60%

Moved by McKeever, seconded by Rickers to approve the claims to the General Fund and Special Building Fund and Quality Capital Purpose Fund.

The superintendent reported on statewide teacher shortages and dual credit for students.

 

The elementary principal reported on ending enrollment, Reading 1st grant, Kindergarten roundup and developmental preschool summer school classes.

 

The secondary principal reported on ending enrollment, alternative school update, 2009-10 class schedule, 2009/10 parent student handbook, 2009-10 budgets and honor rolls.

 

Moved by Crevan, seconded by Zimmerling to approve changes to the 2009-10 calendar as proposed.  (PT conferences will be Sept. 23 & 25, Fall break day will be Oct. 23; add early dismissal on March 31st)

Moved by McKeever, seconded by Rickers, to approve activity admission prices to remain the same as previously ($4.00 for students and adults for varsity competition; $2.00 for students and adults for JV or Jr. High competition; Passes:  $30.00 for students grades 1-12 $45.00 for adults $25 for senior citizens (60+) amd $80.00 for family.

Moved by Creevan, seconded by Zimmerling, to approve the first reading of board policy 604.03 and approve the regulation 604-03-R2. (Special Education)

Moved by Rickers, seconded by McKeever, to accept with appreciation the grant from the Thomas Foundation toward the purchase of a baby grand piano.

Carried: 6-0

The changes in the activity handbook was tabled until July.

 

Moved by Zimmerling, seconded by Creevan, to go into executive session at 8:18 p.m. for personnel matters.

Moved by Creevan, seconded by Milligan, to come out of executive session at 9:56 p.m.

Carried: 6-0

Voting Yes:  Argo, Creevan, McKeever, Milligan, Rickers, Zimmerling

 

Moved by McKeever, seconded by Milligan, to approve a contract for Earnest Lee Hall as Superintendent for 2009-10 at a salary of $85,000.

Carried: 6-0

Voting Yes:  Argo, Creevan, McKeever, Milligan, Rickers, Zimmerling

 

Moved by Rickers, seconded by Zimmerling to adjourn the meeting at 10:00 p.m.

Carried: 6-0
