Levy Overide Vote Fails

Voters on Tuesday, September 9th, voted down the levy override which had been proposed by the Southern School Board.
Almost 600 voters came out to cast their ballot on the override. The final vote was 318 against and 277 for the override, which would have given the district the authority to levy up to 30 cents above the state’s general fund levy lid of $1.05 for five years. The levy increase would have included the current exclusions which are obligated insurance bond levy and Capital Purpose levy for a total of $1.25 levy. In addition, the district is still obligated for 1999 building bond of approximately 10.5¢ which would make the total levy about $1.355
Now, Southern Superintendent Michael Shimeall said, school officials will begin looking at cuts.
Some of the possible cuts include:
- Eliminate or cut back on busing to and from school.
- Change to a four-day school week.
- Eliminate the summer Jump Start Program.
- Reduce the number of paraprofessional positions.
- Share a superintendent with another district.
- Eliminate a position at the elementary school.
- Eliminate the community counselors program.
- Eliminate or reduce academic programs, including physical education, family and consumer science, business, shop, fine arts, math, science and language arts.
- Eliminate field trips.
- Eliminate or reduce athletic programs.
