With the start of the new school year Southern Elementary School
welcomed three new teachers to their ranks. The new teachers have
already been busy working with returning staff on the school’s
reading program and with Educational Service Unit 5 in learning
requirements for their new role as Special Education teachers at
Southern Elementary
.
Doug Washburn, formerly from Ashland, joins the staff as Resource
Teacher for grades five and six. Mr. Washburn replaces Ms Heidi
Zeller in that position. He holds both his bachelors and masters
degrees from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Mr. Washburn has
several years of elementary teaching experience in both regular and
special education. He is an active member of the “Sons of the
American Legion” and has twice served as its State Commander. He
and his wife Barbara have two children.
New as a teacher, but not new to the staff, is Mrs. Dawn Allerheiligen who will serve as a Resource Teacher in the position formerly held by Christy TenKley. For the past two years Mrs. Allerheiligen has served as a paraprofessional at Southern Elementary School after having been a long-term substitute for several years. She holds her baccalaureate degree in Elementary Education from Fort Hays State University and has previously taught in both Kansas and Arizona. Dawn Allerheiligen and her husband, Mark, live at Bremen, Kansas.
Mrs. Erin Trusty is also a new Resource Teacher, replacing
Melissa Wach in Grades K-2. Mrs. Trusty is a first year teacher who
lives in Beatrice. She holds a Masters of Special Education and her
baccalaureate degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
Last year, Mrs. Trusty completed her student teaching at Roper
Elementary School in Lincoln. She and her husband, Eric, have two
children.
