COURSE TITLE:  Computer Applications

 

MATERIALS NEEDED FOR CLASS: 

 

Binder or folder to keep handouts –vocabulary and notes--handouts

Pencil or Erasable pen

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES AND COMPETENCIES

            Course will:

Provide information on computer basics and the Windows operating system.

Provide the basics of using applications in the Microsoft Office software suite.

Utilize word processing features using Microsoft Word.

Utilize spreadsheet features using Microsoft Excel

Utilize presentation features using Microsoft PowerPoint

Utilize database management features using Microsoft Access

Introduce students to integration of Microsoft Office Applications

Introduce students to Desktop Publishing

Introduce students to Voice Recognition—Dragon Naturally Speaking

Possible use of the handheld computer for class activities.

 

Competencies Student will be able to:

 

Use Windows desktop and operating system.

Use the Microsoft Office applications

Use Word in Microsoft Office to produce business documents with word processing features.

Use Excel in Microsoft Office to produce spreadsheets and charts.

Use PowerPoint in Microsoft Office to produce presentations.

Use Access to produce electronic databases.

Integrate files created in Microsoft Office applications

Produce documents using Voice Recognition—Dragon Naturally Speaking

Use a handheld computer to word process, build a database, and keep organized.

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

 

Students will be required to complete a required number of daily assignments before taking a unit examination.

Students must complete all daily and test work as assigned with a grade of 70 percent or above in order to take any further Computer Applications courses or received credit from various colleges for taking high school Computer Applications.

  1. Your NAME AND PAGE NUMBERS must be placed in the header section of your paper.

4.  Please be responsible for your workstation—Pick up papers, push in chair, put away books or

handouts.

 

  1.  Your files MUST be on the server or disk or you will receive a zero and detention time.  YOU DO NOT DELETE FILES UNLESS DIRECTED TO DO SO.

 

You are not to sit on the tables or desks, and you do not bother the shades.

 

SPECIFIC COURSE REQUIREMENTS

 

a.   Passing grade—70 percent or higher based on the handbook grading scale.

b.   Integrity—Student cheating, including plagiarism, will result in the

     student receiving a zero on the assignment or test and will   

     serve detention time according to the instructor’s decision.

c.   Guidelines—All standard classroom etiquette will be followed.  This course

is designed to be a positive interactive experience for all involved.  Inappropriate language or comments will result in lowering of grade, detention time, or removal from class.

 

LATE PAPERS 10 POINT DEDUCTION PER DAY.

Pre-make up work for activities missing class or student will receive a zero.

Make-up work will be done between 3:32 and 4.—If you make an appointment with

     Mrs. Zimmerman, and fail to keep it, you will receive a zero.

Students are to work on assigned work for Computer Applications and not other subjects during class time.

 

Your work must be completed and permission from Mrs. Zimmerman before being on the Internet or playing any type of games.

 

You are not to sit on the tables or desks, and you do not bother the shades.

METHODS OF EVALUATION

 

First Semester

--Daily Work      --20%

--Timed Writings--20%

--Tests--               --40%

--Work Ethic        --20%

Each student starts out the day with five points.  These points include—(1) being to class on time and in your seat, working when the bell rings, (2) having materials necessary for class, (3) homework/class assignment done, (4) conduct/behavior in class, and (5) participation in class discussions.  A point will be deducted for each of these daily tasks a student does not fulfill.   5= 100, 4=80, 3=60, 2=40, 1=20

 

--Semester Test—10%

 

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

Students are to follow the Southern High Technology Policy as stated in the Parent/Student Handbook.  It is your responsibility to read the handbook.

 

Students will follow Mrs. Zimmerman’s 4 P’S:

PUNCTUAL—One tardy—after that you will serve detention time. You will start with 15 minutes.  Additional tardies five minutes add on time.

PREPARED—All materials with you—no going to locker to get materials.

POLITE—Respect to others—FOLLOW THE GOLDEN RULE

POSITIVE—I Can attitude

 

ABSENCES

It is the student’s responsibility to get class assignments and to complete them according to classroom and school policy.

 

Pre-make up work for activities missing class or zero

 

If you miss more than ten days as allowed by your handbook per semester, you will make up the time missed from class on a date or dates set up by the instructor and fill out a credit appeal form

SEMESTER TESTS

 

All students are required to take a semester test.  The semester test will count ten percent of your grade.

 

**ARTICULATION AGREEMENT—SCC**

 

Students who take Computer Applications in High School may test out or not have to take various classes at various colleges.  Colleges will look at your high school transcript.  (Example) When a student enters UNL and majors in Business Administration, the Business College will WAIVE the computer competency requirement and not require the student to pay a testing fee or file other paperwork if the student has successfully passed the competency exam.
