Foundations of Art

Foundations of Art is a class for juniors and seniors that can be taken for dual credit from Southern Schools and Peru State College.  Registration for college credit will be in January.  The class focuses on developing an understanding of what is art, when and why, plus studying the elements and principles of art while looking at various works of art.

 

Text:   Gilbert’s Living With Art   sixth edition

 

Objective:   The objective of the course is to provide information and experience that will allow increased understanding and appreciation of the visual arts and architecture throughout history and in the present.     

 

Instruction Method/Mode of Delivery:  Lecture, Cooperative learning, and project work

 

Student Requirements:

1.  Reading:   Each student is responsible for all assigned reading.

2. Quizzes:  Eleven quizzes will be given.  Each student must take all quizzes to receive a passing grade.  The quiz questions will be multiple choice, using images from the text and lecture, and short answer questions.

Modifications may be made and changes will be announced in class

 

3. Writing/Research Assignments:  Writing and research will be utilized as a part of the process of investigating the visual arts.  These assignments may vary in length and complexity.  All projects must be completed to receive a passing grade for the class.  Late assignments will loose a full letter grade.

 

4. Studio Assignments:  Simple studio projects will be used as a means of demonstrating and evaluating understanding of visual concepts.  All. Studio projects must b4e completed you receive a passing grade for the class.  Late assignments will lose a full letter grade.

  Assessment method:  Final grade will be made in the following manner.  Quizzes 40%, Writing and Research 25%, Studio Assignments 25%, and Participation 10%
