8 th Grade Social Studies
1 st Semester: Civics
Mrs. Winter
8th Grade Social Studies will be completely different from 7th grade. Not only do you have the same teacher L, but it is also a completely new subject.
1st Semester will cover Civics or American Government. 2nd Semester will be spent learning about Economics. For the time being, we will focus on Civics. The basic idea of Civics is to learn about the way the American Government functions and how it affects your everyday life from being a good citizen to possibly running for office someday! Some of the items to be covered in Civics are:
The foundations of American Citizenship
How our American Government was created
The 3 branches of Government and how they function
The American legal system
Decision making by American Citizens
6 pillars of Character and how it creates a better citizen
Second Semester will focus on Economics. Some of the items to be discussed in Economics are:
Checking and Saving Accounts
Loans
Credit Cards
Advertising
Debit Cards
Supply and Demand
Various types of Insurance
Income Tax
Class expectations:
What you can expect from me:
A fair teacher who wants every student to work up to there potential. Everyone has the ability to learn and I expect each and every one of you to utilize that ability.
My class format is different than some teachers. I do not stand up and lecture for the entire class period or expect you take notes for an entire class period. I DO however like to have fun while learning Social Studies! There will be a lot of classroom discussion, participation, and class activities either in groups or with partners.
At times you will be required to work alone or take some notes while I discuss things but that will not be done on a regular basis.
You will be graded on daily work, tests & quizzes, projects, participation, attitude, behavior, and effort.
I expect everyone to come into class with a positive attitude and ready to learn. Park your bad attitude at the door and I will do the same! J
What I expect from you:
A positive attitude and to be prepared for class. This includes having any homework completed and all utensils needed for that day.
Progress Reports will be given on a fairly regular basis and should be signed by a parent or guardian, and returned upon the given deadline. They are not optional; it is considered an assignment, and is expected to be turned in. That is designed to not only keep you and your parents/guardians informed but also to give your grade an easy boost!
Names should always appear on your papers, which are turned in. If no name is on them they will go into a no name file where you can claim it for deducted points.
All assignments are to be completed in either pencil or pen. The color of pen is optional as long as it isn’t pink or red. I do need to be able to read it however.
Please make sure your assignment is readable or you may be asked to redo it again…for late points.
The standard grading scale for Southern Jr/Sr High will be used on a regular basis unless a rubric is used (Details will follow at a later date.)
Finally, the best time for you or your parents to reach me is either before or after school or during my planning period from 1:37 p.m. to 2:33 p.m. at 645-3326 or at home at 228-1627
In short, be smart, be positive, make good choices and lets have a great year! I will do everything in my power to do the same. If we work together, we can achieve more! J Mrs. Winter
