Syllabus

Art 1 is
a class dedicated to the discovery of how Art is a part of our
lives starting with the creation of cave art to the present day art
with its many styles and techniques.
Included
is how the elements and principles of art are identified in the
variety of these art works.
The text
used is The Visual Experience
by Hobbs
and Salome.
Chapters
1-12 will be covered throughout the year.
AREAS OF STUDY:
Chapter 1 What is Art?
Demonstrate an understanding of the broad definitions of art by listing traditional and nontraditional art materials and subjects.
Consider factors that contribute to the something being considered a piece of art
Perceive and describe the media and subjects of a variety of past and present artworks
Chapter 2 How should we look at Art?
Explain how art philosophy can help in the study of art
Describe some of the criteria that can be sued to determine if something
Define aesthetic experience
Describe the role of art critic
Use description, analysis, interpretation, and evaluation to critique
Chapter 3 Line
Identify and draw a variety of descriptive lines including outlines, contour lines, and hatching
Identify and explain how artists use implied lines
Perceive and discuss how lines can be expressive
Use a variety of lines in their
Create 4 section line design in colored pencil
Chapter 4 Shape and Form
Increase visual awareness of 3-D space in order to facilitate stronger composition
Understand the use and importance of negative shapes, help students develop a greater sense if negative shapes in order to strengthen their overall composition
Create a Tessellation using either translation, rotation, or Transition
Create a hand drawing using foreshortening with the background being a part of the room
Chapter Value and Color
Have students select a subject and develop an image wity self-expression
Teach value student whole at the same time giving students more decision-making power
Understand value study and how it can create more powerful images
Create color charts of value scales of black to white, one color mixed with black and white, and a saturation scale.

Chapter 6 Space
Identify and use a variety of ways to show depth and space ib a flat surface, such as foreshortening, diminishing size, overlapping, placement, and linear and aerial perspective
Recognize and discuss means that artists and architects use to manipulate three-dimensional space in sculptures and interiors
Analyze artworks drawn with one- and two-point perspective by identifying the horizontal line, vanishing points and converging Create artworks that effectively utilize space: a drawing that extends from the edges of a picture from a magazine showing the original perspective
Chapter 7 Texture
Perceive and describe textures in the environment and in artworks
Differentiate between actual and simulated textures in artworks
Understand how texture can be used to suggest emotional qualities in art
Create a print or collage featuring textures
Create a slab picture in clay that demonstrates 4 kinds of texture
Create a vase from clay showing movement from texture choices
Create a mug using either the coil or slab method and decorate
Chapter 8 Principles of Design
Create an enlarged image based on an isolated section of foreign money as subject
Create a banner illustrating an understanding of the principles of design
Changes may be made in the curriculum if needed

Quizzes will be given at the end of a chapter in an open book format. A required semester test will be given from quizzes and class work.
Sketches will be due on Thursdays. During the first part of the year in class work will be done. Occasional homework assignments will be given to support learned materials. Two texts will be used for reference, Discovering Drawing and Hooked on Drawing. Assignment sheets will be given for each quarter listing the weekly sketches due
A variety of projects will be completed through out the year. Work will be done in colored pencils, paint, clay, etc.
Behavior is a very important component of the art room. Students are to come to class prepared to work. If you are late to class you will have to make p the time after school. Students at all times are to be respectful of the teacher, other students, their artwork and supplies in the room. If you do not follow these rules you will be given a detention. This class is not considered a traditional classroom; it is a room where students must move about getting supplies and working on projects. A student must be willing to use self-discipline in the area of behavior and work ethics.
Absences: The school allows 10 missed days during the semester. If you go over that amount you will need to get signed permission from the teacher if you wish to receive credit.
Make-up work: You have two days to make up work for any absence. If you know you are going to be gone for any reason you need to have the work made up before you leave. If you miss in class work on sketches or project work, it is your responsibility to come in after school to get assignments or put in extra work time. Extra time will be given at the discretion of the Teacher.
Grades will be given in the following percentages:
15% Quizzes
20% Sketchbook
55% Projects
10% Behavior
Semester test will count 10% of your semester grade
NO LATE SKETCHES OR PROJECTS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE ASSIGNED DUE DATE!!!!!
