Southern Fifth Grade Band

The Southern Fifth Grade Band had 17 members in the 2005-2006 school year. Fifth grade is the year students can join band. The band recruitment is in September and listed on your Southern school calendar. Students start taking lessons in mid-September and lessons are held approximately once a week on a rotational schedule. At the end of each month students receive a schedule for the next month. Lessons do not always fall on the same day of the week, so it is important students and parents follow the schedule closely. The students' first concert is in December where they can actually play two songs after only three months of learning an instrument. Students test on instruments and do a survey of their musical skills before the September meeting so that the best possible instrument choice can be selected before the first lesson. Parents can choose to rent an instrument from a music store with a 4 month trial period, use an instrument they own, and there are a few instruments that the school rents to students. Its extremely important the instrument is in good working condition. Please rent instruments from a reputable music store. Instruments from department/discount stores, and discount e-bay type instruments are usually inferior, play out of tune, and are difficult to learn on. Music stores endorse their instruments, repair them, offer warranties, and provide assistance. We have road representatives from two music stores that stop by the school once a week. Ms. Gerdes sells supplies such as reeds, oils, neck straps and books and CDs.
