EXPLORING LIFE SKILLS

Course Syllabus

1st Semester, 2005-2006

 

 

Reason for this course: The purpose of this course is to introduce, in a brief period of time, all jr. hi. students to the area of family and consumer science, not only to assist them in planning future high school courses, but to help the student in identifying career &/or personal interests in this area. The primary focus will be on learning the life skills necessary to become successful, particularly in relationships formed with others.

 

 

Resource text used: Exploring Life Skills, EMC / Paradigm Publishing

 

 

Student Provided Materials (needed for class EVERY DAY):

a spiral notebook OR 3 ring binder with notebook paper (that will be used for this course ONLY)

something to write with - pen or pencil

 

 

Course Outline

 

Unit I - Getting Along With Others (1st 4-5 weeks of the semester)

Chp. 9 Defining relationships

Learning to appreciate differences

Stereotypes and their effect on relationships

Chp. 12 Learning to communicate effectively

Sending I-messages

Active listening

Conflict resolution

 

 

 

***The following units are options for the remaining part of the semester. Class members will decide during the first week of class, which units will be studied, and in what order.

 

Choosing and Preparing Good Food (approx. 6-7 weeks)

Chp. 20-25 Using the Food Pyramid to select healthy foods

Identify the six nutrient groups and why they’re needed

Looking at fitness - how exercise & diet work together

Learning to read and use recipes

Preparing a variety of food items

Hospitality and entertaining guests

 

 

Basic Sewing Skills (approx. 3-4 weeks)

Chp. 29 Learning basic repair techniques - sewing on buttons, fixing hems, seams, etc.

Choosing appropriate equipment to sew

Learning to operate a sewing machine safely

Constructing a simple pillow

 

Child Development (approx. 3-4 wks)

Chp. 13 Learning how children grow and develop - from conception through adolescence

Choosing “tools” (toys) to help them learn

Chp. 14 Learning how to care for children

 

 

Choosing A Career Path (approx. 2-3 wks)

Chp. 8 & pgs. 244-253, 320-327, 428-435, 508-513, 560-566

 

Choosing a career that’s right for you

Steps to your first job

Writing a resume’ and a job application

Interviewing skills

Work ethics

 

Looking Your Best (approx. 1-2 wks)

Chp. 26 Cleanliness and skin care

Hair style and care

Good grooming guidelines - hands, feet, teeth, & posture

Chp. 27 Choosing clothing that compliments you

Clothing design elements and how to make them work for you

 

 

Opposite Sex Relationships (approx. 2-3 wks)

Chp. 11 Maintaining healthy, positive friendships with members of the opposite sex

Dating

Love development

 

 

Getting Along with the Elderly (approx. 1-2 wks)

Chp. 15 Understanding the needs elderly people commonly have

Looking at the changing roles/activities of elderly people

Develop skills needed to assist and enhance lives of elderly people

 

 

 

 

Additional units that may be added include: money management, home care & design, or other student selected courses related to this area.
