INDEPENDENT LIVING

Course Syllabus

(1st semester 2005-2006)

 

 

Reason for this course: This course is designed to help students make the adjustment between living in a family setting, to living on one’s own. Emphasis will be on finding and keeping employment, checking account management, finding suitable housing, maintaining health through good nutrition and wise decision making.

 

 

Materials Used (school provided):

Life On Your Own - student work/text

Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Publishing, 2006 edition

NEFE High School Financial Planning Program (student workbook)

National Endowment for Financial Education

 

 

Student Provided Materials (needed for class EVERY DAY):

a spiral notebook OR a 3 ring binder with notebook paper (that will be used for this class ONLY)

something to write with - either pen or pencil

 

 

 

Course Outline

 

Unit I: Taking Charge of Your Life

Looking out for the changes ahead, setting goals/priorities, time and resource management, etc.

 

Unit II: People Skills

Communicating with family, friends, roommates, co-workers, and others

 

Unit III: Navigating Your Career

Why do I have to work anyway?

How can I find the job that’s right for me?

How do I apply for the job openings I find?

How do I write a letter of application? a resume’? a follow up letter?

How am I going to get through an interview?

Once I get a job, how am I going to make sure I keep it?

 

 

Unit IV: Financial Know How (Financial Planning workbook)

How do I set up and use a budget?

What are checking and savings accounts? Why are they useful?

How do I balance my checkbook? Why do I have to?

What is credit and how do I get it? When do I need it?

What is insurance and do I need it?

What is income tax and how do I pay it?

 

Unit V: A Place to Call Home

What do I need to look when looking for a place to rent?

What are rental agreements and leases?

What rights and responsibilities do I have as a tenant?

How can I get along with my roommates?

What am I going to put inside my four walls and how am I going to keep them clean? Why do I have to???
