LIFE SKILLS

Course Syllabus - 2005-2006

 

 

Reasons for this course: Designed for freshmen, this course is a beginning study of all areas of family and consumer science, including relationships, child care, foods, clothing, home care, careers and resource management. Information and skills gained from the Exploring Life Skills course will be built upon, giving the student a broader base from which to make those decisions related to future high school courses and/or a career choice.

 

Text Used: Building Life Skills - Goodheart-Wilcox Publishing, 2003

plus other supplementary materials from a variety of resources

 

Student Provided Materials (needed for class EVERY DAY):

a spiral notebook OR a 3 ring binder with notebook paper (that will be used for this class ONLY)

something to write with - either pen or pencil

 

 

Course Outline

 

Unit I Learning About Yourself and Getting Along With Others

(Chapters 1-6 in text)

Growing and changing, personality development, facing challenges, communicating with others, your family and friends

 

***After the first unit, students will determine which of the following units of study will be undertaken, and in what order.

 

Resource Management (Chapters 7-9)

Using personal, material, and natural resources wisely

` Using the management process, making decisions

Creating & following a budget

Managing a checking account

Knowing your rights and responsibilities as a consumer

Making wise purchasing decisions

Understanding Children (chp 10-15)

Pregnancy and prenatal development

Physical, social, emotional, & intellectual development

Toys & play - safety

Caring for children - parenting/baby-sitting

 

Your Health & Nutrition (chp 16-32)

The Food Pyramid and how to use it to plan healthy meals

Nutrients and why they're needed

Reading food labels

Managing your weight

Handling food safely & kitchen safety

Getting ready to cook - recipes, utensils, measuring, etc.

Purchasing/Storing/Preparing -- Dairy products

Breads & cereals

Fruits & vegetables

Meats & meat alternates

Planning & preparing meals

Serving & eating meals (manners)

 

 

The Clothes You Wear (chp 33-39)

Looking your best - grooming and choosing clothing that compliments you

Shopping for clothing - what to look for

Laundering, repairing, and storing clothing

Choosing patterns, fabric, notions

Reading pattern information

Laying out & cutting pattern pieces

Choosing & using sewing equipment correctly

Learning to operate a sewing machine safely & correctly

Sewing a simple garment

 

The Place You Call Home (chp 40-42)

Looking at the needs housing meets

Basic elements of interior design

Using these elements to create (or recreate!) your personal living space

Keeping your home clean and safe

 

 

 

Career Decisions and Job Skills (chp 43 - 47)

Working with a group - developing leadership skills
